Owner / President
Marquis Sauvage began in the wine business as a young man, owner of a wine bar in Colorado. His passion for wine lead to the family investment in fine wine distributorships in Colorado, Illinois, Nevada and Texas. Marquis is surprised to find himself owning cattle in Central Otago so many years after leaving the family farm in Kansas. He and his brother Alan are passionate lovers of fine wines from around the world. Alan manages the family investment in Koehler Ruprecht in the Rhinepfalz.
Winemaker / Vice President
Ted Lemon's thirty years of experience as a head winemaker and vineyard manager are the guiding hand on the tiller at Burn Cottage. Ted is well known in both the new and old worlds for his passionate devotion to producing terroir driven wines. Ted earned an enology degree from the Universite de Bourgogne, apprenticed at Domaines Dujac, Roumier, De Villaine and Bruno Clair and was the first American ever hired to manage an estate in Burgundy, Domaine Guy Roulot in Meursault. He and his wife Heidi founded their estate, Littorai Wines, in Sonoma County, California in 1993.
General Manager / Associate Winemaker
Claire is the most recent addition to the Burn Cottage team, joining us in 2010. She is widely respected for her years of experience as head winemaker at Martinborough Vineyards and at Amisfield, both in New Zealand. She has traveled the world to do vintages abroad and brings with her a deep knowledge of New Zealand winegrowing.
Vineyard Manager / Head Viticulturalist
There would be no Burn Cottage vineyards without Jared's many years of dedication to the property. Indeed, the greatest question Marquis and Ted faced upon property development was who would be capable of developing a world class biodynamic vineyard in Central Otago? It required both extensive local experience and yet an open eye to world class viticultural standards. Jared has brought rigor and passion to Burn Cottage since inception.
